Louis Visser claims Timber City Cycle Tour Title

Team Dimension Data Continental rider Louis Visser and Anriette Schoeman from Team Africa Silks won the men and women’s titles respectively at the 7th edition of the Timbercity Cycle Tour hosted by Eden Cycling on Sunday, 1 October 2017 in Oudtshoorn.

In the men’s elite race Louis Visser beat Marchal Hendricks (Team Cycle4Diabetes) and David Garett (Team Giant) by one minute. The women’s race was close with Anriette finishing only a seond before Yolande de Villiers, with Finie Barnard in third spot.

The Timber City Cycle Tour was Louis Visser’s first race since he returned from Lucca, Italy. Since the race was held in his hometown of Oudtshoorn, he was confident going into the race, as he knows the route quite well.

“The race started pretty slow with the bunch staying together until we hit the 2nd climb of the day. Four of us rode away from the peloton and caught the 2-man breakaway. Three of us then attacked the group and stayed away until 10 km from the finish. I attacked and managed to stay away managing to pull out a gap of one minute and 25 seconds,” said Louis.

“It was great to take the win in my home town and a privilege to share the podium space with the ladies winner Anriette Schoeman, an icon in women’s cycling in South-Africa,” he concluded.

Louis’s next challenge will be The Momentum Health Cape Pioneer Trek, taking place from 15-21 October 2017 in the Southern Cape. He will partner with Marchal Hendricks from Team Cycle4Diabetes, who came second in the Timber City Cycle Tour.

The road race on Sunday catered for every level of cyclist with a flat 30km, a slightly more challenging 57km to the Cango Caves, and a 104km stretch into Matjiesrivier at the foot of the Swartberg Mountain range.
